Album Title: Dis 1. 4. Raf - Disc 2
Artist: Andy Narell
Label: Listen2
Provenance: Recorded and Mixed to 96kHz, 24-bit WAV PCM.   With his first solo album in 1979 Andy Narell took the steel pan out of the steel band and brought it into the jazz band, and with every recording and concert since, he has explored the possibilities and expanded the role of the pan in contemporary music. After several years of collaborations with the great calypsonian Relator, The WDR Big Band, Trinidad All Stars, Sakésho, and three albums of steel band music with guest soloists, Narell is back with a jazz album – a double CD featuring his Paris based quintet. CD#1 is all originals and features Cuban pianist Janysett McPherson, Cuban percussionist Inor Sotolongo, bassist Thierry Fanfant and drummer Gregory Louis from Guadeloupe. CD#2 is a set of duets with Janysett McPherson on piano. The album opens with the title track ‘Dis 1. 4. Raf,’ which Narell composed for the 2016 Panorama in Trinidad. Dedicated to the memory of the great Trinidadian musician Raf Robertson, the song launches into a journey through Afro-Caribbean styles – calypso, soca, biguine, son montuno, rumba – all glued together by Narell’s compositions and the chemistry of a band that has played many concerts together.   https://bluecoastmusic.com/andy-narell/dis-1-4-raf-disc-2

Links to listen and purchase: https://bluecoastmusic.com/valerie-joyce-michael-wolff/for-heavens-sake   Album Title:  For Heaven's Sake Artist:  Valerie Joyce Michael Wolff Label: VJI Music
Provenance: Recorded to 44.1kHz 24-bit PCM, mixed through an analog stage to DSD256   Valerie Joyce and Michael Wolff come together to create For Heaven's Sake, a transportive jazz album meshing the rich and lush vocal stylings of Valerie Joyce and the deep expressive piano of Michael Wolff. Originally recorded in Brooklyn, For Heaven's Sake is a testament to collaboration. Both artists allow time to properly compliment each other. Their take on these songs bring new life to the original jazz recordings. Valerie Joyce's voice floats over the piano on Duke Ellington's In a Sentimental Mood. Songs like Silent Sky allow for instrumental richness as the song builds to crescendo with Michael Wolff's piano. This album is a must have.

Album Title: Látigo
Artist: Quartet San Francisco
Label: ViolinJazz Recordings
Provenance: Látigo was originally recorded to 8832 PCM   Though Quartet San Francisco has regularly performed a wide range of material—Beethoven to Brubeck, Mozart to Mingus—Jeremy Cohen cultivates a special long-standing devotion to tango. For two years he played with the theatrical revue Forever Tango during its oft-extended San Francisco run (1995-1997). In 2004, Quartet San Francisco was among 30 competitors participating in the New York City International Tango Competition, sponsored by the Argentine Consulate. The quartet won both the Special Prize and the Grand Prize, which awarded them five performances in Buenos Aires and New York in the 2004-2005 season.   Látigo takes its title (Spanish for “whip”) from the term describing a performance technique used in tango—a quick slide or glissando of a left-hand finger on a stringed instrument for the purpose of simulating the sound of a whip.   GRAMMY Awards (2007) for Látigo: Nomination, Best Classical Crossover Album Nomination, Best Engineered Album, Classical

San Francisco Symphony / Mahler - Songs with Orchestra / SFS Media

Links to listen and purchase: https://bluecoastmusic.com/san-francisco-symphony/mahler-songs-with-orchestra   Album Title:  Mahler - Songs with Orchestra Artist:  San Francisco Symphony Label: SFS Media Provenance: Originally recorded and mixed to 96kHz, 24-bit WAV PCM. Our files were generated from the authored DSD master.   Mahler left his Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer) as a marker to what may have been no more than an infatuation with Johanna Richter. She was a soprano at the opera house in the Hessian city of Kassel, where, at twenty-three years old, Mahler served as second conductor. He was already the composer of an amazing cantata, Das klagende Lied, as well as of a number of songs. With experience as a conductor in small theaters, he had made his start on the path to celebrity.
In the summer of 1901, Gustav Mahler discovered, or more probably rediscovered, the poems of Friedrich Rückert. Rückert was born in 1788 in the Franconian city of Schweinfurt. He devoted most of his career to the study of Eastern languages and literatures, a subject in which he became a professor, first at the University of Erlangen and later in Berlin. He died in 1866. Some of his most beautiful poetry is to be found in his large book of Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the Deaths of Children), forced into being by the death of his young son Ernst. Mahler selected five of these for a cycle of songs, beginning that work in 1901 together with the Five Songs on Poems by Friedrich Rückert heard on this recording.
Mahler was a young conductor at the Leipzig Theater when he discovered the collection of folk poetry that would inspire him with its tales of magic and fairylands, soldiers and lovers. He made musical settings of twenty-two Songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn, of which we hear five on this recording. Des Knaben Wunderhorn, or The Youth’s Magic Horn, was compiled between 1805 and 1808 by Ludwig Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano. In their compilation, von Arnim and Brentano gathered original sources but also revised and rewrote some of their material, ensuring a suitably antiquated aura. It was an amazingly influential publication, a kind of Romantic sourcebook for 19th-century German artists. Mahler set the last of his Wunderhorn texts in 1902, marking the end of an early part of his career, but continued to orchestrate them, and orchestral forms of the music he invented for the verses often found their way into his early symphonies. The orchestral version of the Lied des Verfolgten im Turm was first heard in 1905, in Vienna; Wo die schönen Trompeten blasen was premiered in Vienna in 1900; Urlicht was originally heard first as part of the Symphony No. 2, in Berlin, in 1895. No information is available on the first performances of the orchestral versions of Der Tamboursg’sell and Revelge.

Hazelrigg Brothers / Songs We Like / Hazelrigg Brothers

Links to listen and purchase:
https://bluecoastmusic.com/hazelrigg-brothers/songs-we-like

Album Title: Songs We Like
Artist: Hazelrigg Brothers
Provenance: Recorded in DSD128 and mastered through analog console to DSD256.   Songs We Like is exactly what it claims to be; it is a collection of songs (or "pieces,” in the cases of Bartok and Fischer) that have a unique connection to our past and influence on our musicality. Each has steadily remained a relevant part of the musical landscape. What has changed is our perspective. Culture evolves, as do our own senses and tastes, but the melodies remain the same. It is for us to translate them into something congruent with our current ideals and lifestyles. Whereas we used to be a common sight in the rock clubs of Philadelphia and New Jersey, the din of guitar amps and smell of stale beer don't have the same allure they once did. One must imagine that this holds true for many who have been lifelong fans of Jimi Hendrix or Led Zeppelin. We have chosen the piano trio format to achieve an alternate aesthetic for these songs, which continue to resonate with us and with so many people.   “The recorded sound is expertly shaped around the trio and the excellent soli so that it is impossible not to be knocked out by the sheer creative firepower of each artist as well as by a recording that meets every demand of the audiophile in the capture and delivery of this music” – World Music Report   “…the group has searched for—and found—a process of recording that captures to perfection the experience of hearing a piano trio in the real world—warm and interactive, organic, the bass embracing drums like it does from the seat in one of the front rows of a small jazz club, with the piano dancing inside that musical abrazo, on this highly-engaging debut” – All About Jazz
"I can’t recommend this album highly enough and I hope to see the Hazelrigg brothers live on the European stage’s sooner rather than later.” – Jazz in Europe

The band masters the challenging Blue Rondo a la Turk and a wonderful, offbeat arrangement of Paul Desmond's Take Five that suggests a country hoedown at times.   GRAMMY Awards (2009) for QSF Plays Brubeck: Nomination, Best Classical Crossover Album Nomination, Best Engineered Album, Classical

William Gibson "Winter Market"

If you don't know William Gibson, you should.  Neuromancer?  Anyone? William Gibson's fiction often is set in the near future.  Unfortunately, some of his plot elements, in some form, come to pass. There is a collection of his early short stories entitled "During Chrome" highly recommended. One of the short stories is titled "Winter Market".   Without a spoiler, the story involves the future of entertainment AR, VR and more. Winter Market also has a short riff on the protagonist's father who produced vinyl.  Cool.

San Francisco Symphony / Absolute Jest & Grand Pianola Music / SFS Media

Links to listen and purchase: https://bluecoastmusic.com/san-francisco-symphony/absolute-jest-grand-pianola-music   Album Title: Absolute Jest & Grand Pianola Music Artist: San Francisco Symphony Label: SFS Media Provenance: Recorded and Mixed to 96kHz, 24-bit WAV PCM and 192kHz, 24-bit WAV PCM.   Absolute Jest is a colossal twenty-five-minute scherzo in which I take fragments of Beethoven’s music and subject them to my own peculiar developmental techniques, some of which I’ve derived over years of using “radicalizing” musical software. The Beethoven ideas, mostly from the quartets Opus 131, 135, and the Grosse Fugue, are compact and succinct, lending themselves naturally to fantasy and invention. A swinging 6/8 figure reminiscent of the Seventh Symphony launches the piece, but this is interlaced with some famous “tattoos” including the Ninth Symphony scherzo. Another passage combines two fugue themes (from the Grosse Fuge and from Opus 131) in counterpoint with the orchestra. A final passage features the solo quartet furiously riffing over the opening chord progression of the Waldstein Sonata.

The Concord Sonata by Charles Ives (1874-1954), a towering classic of piano literature, emerged into being over many decades. Its first sketches date to 1904 and its final revision to 1947, but mostly Ives concentrated on it from 1916 to 1919. When he first committed it to publication, in 1920, he described it as “an attempt to present [an] impression of the spirit of transcendentalism that is associated in the minds of many with Concord, Massachusetts, of over a half century ago.” He continued, “This is undertaken in impressionistic pictures of Emerson and Thoreau, a sketch of the Alcotts, and a scherzo supposed to reflect a lighter quality which is often found in the fantastic side of Hawthorne.”
