Rules Of Loudspeaker's Selecting: Transparency Of Sound

We often say about transparency of sound.   What is in technical terms? Or it only subjective characteristic fo our ears?   Certainly we can to measure the transparency.   Transparency is complex of characteristics, which define the capability of non-distorted throughput for device.   If to say simply: Transparency = minimum harmonic distortions + flat frequency characteristic (less +/- 1 dB in declared band).   Usually we apply term "transparency" about hi-frequencies (5-10 kHz). We q

Rules Of Loudspeaker's Selecting: prices and quality

Now we view approximate reasons of forming of prices of speakers.   It's not hard rule of course. For different countries the ranges of prices is variate. But we can see some trend.     For enforcing any speakers sound equally we can correct Amplitude-Frequency and Phase characteristics by equalizer.   But we cant exactly correct this characteristics.   We remember also: these characteristics is various for different points of listening room.   But we can't affect to Total Harmonic Di

Sonic Signatures: The Art and the Science

I believe every piece of audio equipment has its own sonic signature. E.g. CD transports, cartridges, tone arms, turntables, preamps, amps, cross overs, speakers, interconnects, basically every component, part, and wire in (and around, e.g. power supplies) the audio signal path will have its own sonic signature, whether designed or not. Technically, a sonic signature is called a transfer function, but we will get to that shortly. I also believe there is a direct correlation between what we hea

Combining 2 Channel with multi/room/multi amp

Hey everyone, I am extremely happy with my current two channel system which begins with my MBP. My question is how to additionally route the signal to a multi room amp while keeping my current signal quality in shape. Ideally, I'd like to use a wireless solution since the multi room is in a different room than my full system. I do use iTunes through Amarra.   Many thanks in a advance.   My current system   MBP>dCS Scarlatti full stack>Ayre KX-R>BAT Rex pwr amps>Wilson Sasha's

Rules Of Loudspeaker's Selecting: All Speakers Sound Identically?

Somebody say: I can enforce any speakers sound equally.   It is not absolutely correct statement.   What do they mean?   Speaker and room is integrated system. You can't "listen speakers". You can listen system.   Into "system" we must include amplifier and (sometime) cables. But we rarely have all components simultaneously.   Quality of speaker depend by quality of loudspeaker's headers.   Its specification include apart from Amplitude-Frequency and Phase characteristics also Total

Rules Of Loudspeaker's Selecting: Floor vs. Bookshelf Speakers

Why more large loudspeaker (diameter of head) is more preferably?       More diameter - more amply push the air in room. Not any big head will well sound. Don't tempted on big and cheap acoustics.   Big concert acoustics not always is a sound quality standard. Concert acoustics for great sound pressure (on open air also). Demands for harmonic distortions is more soft than for home acoustics.   If you have place on floor, using of the floor speakers is preferably. "Have place" it is di

Rules Of Loudspeaker's Selecting

Here I will tell about selecting of loudspeakers. Always say that the last criterion of assessment of quality - human ear. We will consider: whether so it.   If say exactly, quality of sound very accurately described by specification (numbers and diagrams). Why then: last criterion of assessment of quality - human ear?   Manufacturer don't give all diagrams. Often it is technically impossible (it is too much measurements). For most people (non-audiotechnics-specialist) this diagrams is ha

If you have a TV

You probably need this:     (Click the image for Amazon.com link).   I had a reasonably minor but audible hum in my subwoofer, and I noticed it went away when I detached the cable from my TV. The TV power was turned off, as was my receiver. (Not just standby, but off). Nevertheless, there was a ground loop from the cable to my TV to my connecting HDMI cable to my receiver to my 0.1 LFE input on my sub. I put this in to isolate the incoming cable, and it worked flawlessly.   If there i

A Postscript for Levon

Probably like many of you, in the past several days I have been revisiting a lot of music by Levon Helm and The Band, ever since his recent passing. Today I came upon a tribute to Levon from comic Rob Delaney's tumblr that I would like to share:   http://robdelaney.tumblr.com/post/21759745560/i-love-levon-helm-and-america   (edited after a previous mis-post ... whoops)

Review: Linnenberg UDC1 DAC

I was looking for a DAC to complete my new stereo system. I use an Apple MacBook with Decibel to play digital music via the DAC. The rest of the system consists of DIY preamplifier (Thel VX-D, battery powered class-A MosFet output), two Hifiakadmie PowerAmps, and AOS Studio 24 BE speakers (top-of-the-line ScanSpeak drivers).   Some more specific requirements for my new the DAC were:   High-Res (192/24) asynchronoous USB or FireWire input Discrete analog stage would be nice No vol

Quick Hello and from the beginning.

Hello there   Thought I would post a few words on here about myself, musical taste, what with and, how I listen to music.     First off all would like to thank Chris for setting this site up, and many congratulations on the birth of your baby daughter. Enjoy it, it can be real fun being a farther.   Also thank you for the warm welcome I have had so far from the members.     Well were to start, I suppose at the beginning. Got into music when I was about 11 years old. The first single I

Are "objectivists" unwelcome?

Although I have never been called an "objectivist" before posting here, I guess my outlook is more sympathetic to that camp, given that I think it is unlikely the human ear can distinguish unmeasurable differences, and that claims to the contrary require compelling evidence to be taken seriously.   Given some of the stuff I have read recently, I am beginning to wonder whether those with "objectivist" sympathies, i.e., the "flat-earthers," the "close-minded" "malcontents", are seen as the unsee
