exaSound e20 : One of the best investments I`ve ever made!!

December last year, I started digging around the internet for a USB capable DAC, that could satisfy my fastidious ears. Having searched for a month, I found the Holy Grail of DACs: The exaSound e20 You can read what this DAC is capable of here: http://www.exasound.com/e20DAC/Overview.aspx It`s truly amazing! I have been an "audiophile" since I was about 15 ( 42 now ), so my equipment has seen a lot of upgrades during these years , but very few have made me go thru all my favourite albums ag

Amarra 2.6 and iRC has been released

Hi Richard, again I need some advice. I thought to improve my measurement quality by positioning the mic positions even more accurate and I used higher volume during the measurement (in the middle of the green field in step3 of the measurement) and produced a second set of filter. Unfortunately this filter produce a lot of distortion in the speaker (mainly in the bass and lower mid frequencies) and the meter in Amarra is in the deep RED until I switch iRC gain to "-1". The sound image is wrong

White judge has said so

Hello there     Been quite a while since my last update on this blog, well still in 1980, and this time its UB40 that has turned up on my playlist. Signing Off would off been one off the first 5 lps I had ever brought. For those who don't know UB40 early stuff and only know them for cheesy pop/reggae songs like Red Red Wine ( which I can't stand), this is a different band altogether, before they found a drum machine and at there political best.   Lots of stand out tracks but the one that t

Hue lights

OK, I just spent $260 + tax on four light bulbs. Sue me. I've done worse buying metal halide lightbulbs for my erstwhile reef tanks (a hobby that makes audio look thrifty).   Here is what I bought:   https://www.meethue.com/en-US   <p><a href="/monthly_2013_09/philipshue.jpg.83c38c97b0f401b0ac1b15984c76c124.jpg" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="28213" src="/monthly_2013_09/philipshue.jpg.83c38c97b0f401b0ac1b15984c76c124.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsIm

Amarra 2.6 and iRC has been released

Enjoy the music, Richard   just installed 2.6 and listening. I also ordered IRC but had to order the microphone in USA. Will last a few days till it arrives here in Munich. No money left for the OCTOBERFEST but enjoying music is longer lasting than be drunk for one evening.   Please share your experience with IRC in this forum, I will do also.     keep swinging simplon

Remote Control IV: The Powermate Dial on a remote desktop computer

(Sadly, Redeye has gone belly-up, but this would work with any remote system th

Playback formats on a TEAC UD-501 (TI PCM1795)

This is interesting DAC with a reasonable price tag, looks nice and high quality components.   Since it also offers bypass of the digital interpolation filters with direct 32-bit 352.8/384 PCM input as well as DSD128 support with good set of analog filters (conversion mappings), I wanted to study which would be best way to play back RedBook content on it.   I have excluded time-domain behavior inspections from this post, because going to that domain while keeping the frequenc

Configuring the Beaglebone Black to run Squeezelite

Getting the Beaglebone Black was only supposed to be a fun lesson in following a set of Linux instructions for audio playback, and assessing the merits of embedded systems with low power requirements. The results were convincing enough to share for the first blog, and this next set of instructions is an alternative configuration that will appeal to those who are finding MPD and network mounts to be too complex. With the Squeezebox Ecosystem, the NAS/PC/Mac runs Logitech Media Server and the Beag

I am sad. You help me?

Hey there!   I am new to all this stuff, and finding it a bit overwhelming, but I am determined to sort through, do my homework, and try to get the best quality for my buck.   Right now, I have a fairly extensive collection of AIFF files on my 2006 MacBook, using iTunes. I have this going wirelessly through my Apple TV 3, which is then wired (HDMI or ethernet, I forget) to my Denon AVR-1913. These play through either my B&W bookshelf CM5's or my HD598 Sennheiser headphones.   I wou

Beaglebone Black- the $45 MPD server

-or known as the ‘Summer Holiday’ project. Credit mainly goes to Richard Dale for the build instructions that I simply followed to get ‘bit-perfect’ audio playback with a USB DAC. We shared the view that embedded systems like this are adequate, even for high-end setups. Since I have no previous experience of programming or understanding Linux, I’ll admit it was a big learning curve, and without Richard’s support I would have been hopelessly lost on many occasions.   Recommended accessories:

Update: 90's DAC shootout, updated measurement results

Here's now the promised update with 16-bit TPDF dither. This is also good for comparing how much dither vs truncation makes difference in real world.   CS4328 (1-bit 64x oversampling delta-sigma)   Updated numbers THD=0.002%, IMD=0.003%.   1 kHz sine: <p><a href="/monthly_2013_07/CS4328-1k.png.df27de96ed3830ef16e548317e4c4dad.png" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="28194" src="/monthly_2013_07/CS4328-1k.png.df27de96ed3830

Nursery hifi

I haven't posted in awhile due to being a new father. But couldn't resist sharing my budget, wife-approved setup for my little two month old. It includes a Tivoli Audio Model One (150$), iPod (used 150$), and dock (used 10$). I mostly leave the local classical music station going (no commercials), but occasionally pump through some Pandora or mp3. At night, I put on some pink noise for her.   Hey...she can look back and know that dad made an effort to start her young! Not a bad little bud

90's DAC shootout

I took a pair of my old early 90's DACs from the storage and fed bunch of measurements through both. Source for both was MuFi V-Link192 at 44.1k output. As result of doing this at midnight I forgot to change the output to 16-bit, so you may see some truncation quantization effects too... Both of the DACs claim 18-bit resolution.   Participants:   1) Crystal Semiconductor CS4328 64x oversampling 1-bit DAC chip with 8x interpolation and fifth-order modulator. IOW, so it's prett

Semi-Customized DAC, Part IV: Photos and Filters

So first of all, some photos. Doesn't look like much of anything at this point - really needs a chassis. But it sure sounds nice, even before any rewiring, cap rolling, and vibration control.     <p><a href="/monthly_2013_06/58cd9bc43774f_DAC1.jpg.3c60621289f7c6688763712b3be1bb47.jpg" class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image"><img data-fileid="28176" src="/monthly_2013_06/58cd9bc43774f_DAC1.jpg.3c60621289f7c6688763712b3be1bb47.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" alt=""
