Audiophile help on a mac mini

i am not that familiar with sound bars in general but assumed they were a variation of a powered speaker and therefore would have analog inputs. If that is the case then I would again suggest an external DAC. would provide a significant improvement over direct output from the Mac Mini. Of course all I have is my own personal experience which cannot encompass all the experience, opinions and preferences of the many

bitrot: A shell script to detect changes in the audio component of ALAC files

One of the best things about FLAC is that it contains an internal checksum, so you can see if the audio portion of the file has been changed (i.e., corrupted in some way, or has suffered "bit rot"). You can change the tags embedded in the file all you want, and it won't alter this checksum. The only thing that will cause it to change is damage to the audio content of the file.   Wouldn't it be nice if ALAC had the same feature? It turns out the Apple OS X command-line utility can do this fo

HDTracks: Lorde - Pure Heroine, 48/24

I'm also interested. Acc'd to my rip of the CD, it has an average DR of 6, with a range of 4-7. Lower than what I'm usually able to listen to comfortably, but it sounds okay to me.   Would like to know if the 24/48 is any different.

My Top Albums of 2013

Last year I did a “My Top Albums of 2012” blog and thought I would do another one for 2013. Picking the top albums of 2013 was interesting when comparing to the prior year. In 2012 picking the top albums was easy given the three albums I picked were heads and shoulders above the rest in my mind. In 2013 there were many great albums, but it didn't have the same sort of standouts that 2012 had. This made my job a bit more difficult. I resorted to an Excel spreadsheet with a ranking system to

Cables matter in mastering why not at home?

From the Music Matters, Ltd web site.   "When Ron and I agreed that Kevin was the Engineer we wanted to do the transfers for our Music Matters Blue Note reissue program I began to think about the connectivity issue at Kevin's studio. As VP of product development at AudioQuest since 1983, the knowledge that cables make a difference is hardly new to me!   An inspection of the facility revealed adequate wiring (mostly from Canare I believe) but hardly the stuff of audiophile dreams. As great a

Genelec GLM fault finding     I wrote this guide spurred by a fellow Genelec owner, thought it might come in handy. Original thread on the question.     It is important to note that the Genelec 82XX / 72XX series uses two completely independent networks to communicate with the monitors:   - AES/EBU (XLR cable) that carries the music only - GLM network (USB -> GLM Interface -> RJ45 cable) that controls the monitors: calibration, DSP, volume, X-over freq. etc.   The two functions

SACD &USB DAC

Are new USB DAC with DSD capability able to reproduce an SACD from a SACD transport or a SACD player?. Seems that manufacturer only allow to reproduce the SACD with an external DAC of its own brand. Who knows something about this? I have Weiss DAC with DSD and would like to use it with a SACD. Thanks for any comment javier

Schiit Loki - affordable DSD DAC

Schiit Loki is an interesting product at very affordable price tag. At this price point, there's not much competition on desktop DAC market and even less (none?) on DSD DAC market.   Loki is based on Asahi Kasei Microdevices (AKM) AK4396 DAC chip and asynchronous UAC2 USB interface is implemented using C-Media CM6631A chip. The AK4396 has been one of the most popular DAC chips in pro-audio converters. Loki is USB-powered. Analog reconstruction filter is optimized for DSD use. Since COTS USB-ch

Streamers vs "Macs and Dacs"

In my opinion I do exhaustive and comprehensive research before making a decision. I call it being thorough, but the Delicious Dane (SWMBO) calls it procrastination. Whatever, so it takes me a while to get off the fence; no Housemartins quips please, even though I wrote the book they read....   My most recent piece of intensive research is a tough one to find my way out of. I have two "core" music listening locations. One, the main house, where I have a MacMini (SSD, music on second HDD, lots
