Genelec - What is the rave about?

OK, I'm a Genelec fanboy. You know that if you are a regular at CA.   Do they really sound better? Are Genelecs for everybody? What is the secret technology?     Do they really sound better?   Genelec stands out as the best monitors for money (IMNSHO) because they just sound invisible. But it is not magic and as any other system, they sound best when you feed a great signal and place them wisely in a treated room. Just like anything else.   But that is where the "Just like anything

alsa-capabilities: reveal formats and sample rates your USB DAC supports

Hi,   For your convenience (and mine) I've created the `alsa-capabilities` script, which shows the available alsa interfaces for audio playback in (or connected to) your linux computer, including USB DAC's, and the digital audio formats and sample rates each sound card or external USB DAC supports.   You can run it straight from the web, by copying and pasting the following command in a terminal screen: bash <(wget -q -O - "https://lacocina.nl/alsa-capabilities") ## or bash <(cur

mpd-configure: generate a bit perfect mpd configuration with a single command

Hi there,   All those new (and maybe even older) to music player daemon (mpd), linux and alsa, I've published a free script which with a single command generates a configuration file for mpd, which turns it in to an bit perfect music streamer.   The only requirement is that you have a working linux installation with mpd installed. After opening up a terminal screen, paste the following commands to generate and display a mpd configuration. When multiple audio cards (including USB DACs) are fo

Analog vs. Digital Definitively Answered, Once and For All!

OK, maybe not, but hear me out. I think I found the break-even point between Digital and Analog in my system, and I think it's an interesting data point for some who, like me, have spent years and years and years and countless 10s of $1000s wondering how good my digital system sounds in the grand "scheme," and how much better can it sound, and at what cost? And when the F are people going to stop suggesting I should try vinyl?     DIGITAL OR DIE   For the record (no pun intended), I'm a d

Some analysis and comparison of MQA encoded FLAC vs normal optimized hires FLAC

Now since there are MQA encoded FLAC test files available, I wanted to see how the file works out without MQA decoder - as a normal FLAC.   If we first look at the original 352.8/24 (DXD) file that has FLAC size of 69 MB:   We can see that there is content up to around 57 kHz.     If we then convert it to 44.1/24 we get a FLAC with size of 14 MB:   From the filter roll-off we can see that there's quite a bit less than 24-bit worth of infor

Review: iXsystems FreeNAS Mini: A Plug-and-Play ZFS NAS that doesn't suck to set up.

Like many here, I try to keep computer audio simple. My music library resides on a single external bus-powered Oyen firewire drive. Until recently, this was a 1TB Samsung HDD. I've now replaced it with a 1TB SSD, but what is of relevance here is what happened after about three years of constant, daily use. Like many drives (HHD and SSD), it started to fail. However, it wasn't obvious to me, at first, that the hardware was failing. I am still not certain. When I copied the contents of the

Very basic home networking question.

Comon now- actually your phone will probably stay up during a power outage, because the switches should be on a UPS designed to stay up during power outages and catastrophic events.   Nothing is going to work forever in a fire, but units powering emergency services need to be identified and given special treatment.   I have UPS power from my computer room runnkng to evry floor of our building just to power the switches that power the phones. Makes 911 service available even during a power

Analog vs digital volume control - case study with Mytek Stereo192-DSD DAC

There has been a lot of discussion about different types of volume controls. For comparison purposes of one case I chose to use Mytek Stereo192-DSD DAC which has three different volume control modes; analog, digital and bypass. Signal routing is implemented using relays. DAC chip is ESS Sabre ES9016S in stereo mode (4 DACs in parallel per channel). ESS Sabre has 32-bit volume control and internal DSP pipeline so it has 8 bits more resolution than allowed by 24-bit external input. It also has hig

Jitter in the digital recording-storage-playback chain.

This blog post sums up the influence of jitter in the recording-storage-playback chain in three simple but sound statements.   Note: Statement two rules out systematic differences in the playback of bit identical files due to differences in noise stored along with the information (e.g. through varying strengths of the physical representations of 1s and 0s) when playing from RAM.   1) Jitter during analog to digital conversion is

iTunes "Album Artist" tag, classical music, and filesystem hierarchy

I let iTunes organize my music library. (In the "advanced" preference window, you can choose to let iTunes do this, or you can choose to do it manually. Manual seems too much like work, but I hate that I cannot customize how iTunes organizes things).   iTunes serves many functions, much to many people's annoyance. It is a bloated monstrosity, and gets more annoying and controlling and arbitrary by the year. But like any disfunctional relationship, one clings to hope like a gerbil on grease

How to tame iTunes 12.2

The following settings help to hide some of the more annoying "features":   Uncheck Apple Music (if you don't want to use the streaming service) and iCloud Music Library (unless you use it). (iTunes Preferences > General)             Disable iTunes Store and internet radio (iTunes Preferences > Parental Control). If you leave the iTunes Store enabled, you might want to turn off the automatically fetch album art in the Store preferences. You can still fetch it manually with a

My wife finds my Wall of Sound entirely inadequate and un-involving

After about 20 years of snide comments and sneering dismissal, I dragged the wifey to see the remains of the Dead last Sunday (last week, in Santa Clara, CA). As they were tuning up, she asked me if it had started. I replied that it was about to, and it would be rather unambiguous. They kicked in about 20 minutes behind schedule with "Feel Like a Stranger" and about 79,999 of the approximately 80,000 in attendance of the 50th anniversary of the band that never had a hit were instantly on their

Reviving my DIY USB cable and finding Wow! again

It is too long, unwieldy and looks ugly. That's my DIY USB cable.   After Alex and John posted about the enhancements of their Regen Amber device, I wanted to try modifying my USB cable by adding some small resistance to the ground.   In the meantime, the cable was lying unused since the time I tested a USB 3.0 cable to connect the computer to the DAC (Mac to iFi iDSD Nano). The original idea came from a couple of commercial designs, namely the LightHarmonic USB cable with separated power an

Template for DSD Surround and Stereo Playback

My DSD Template   Hello,   Like you I’ve made the leap to deal with a technology oft maligned but which consistently sounds the best to my ears. It is a big investment in time and money to achieve full advantage of DSD in your system so buyer be ware. In a years time we may see shift to 32 bit music at which point PCM may reign supreme again, however, the file size vs quality leads me to say DSD will be relevant long into the future.   I though it might be valuable to some of you to share

Losses in 1-bit DSD vs multi-bit PCM

Modern PCM sigma-delta converters produce much lower error signals than1-bit sigma-delta DSD converters. The errors in the DSD system are due to the1-bit quantization that occurs in 1-bit sigma-delta DSD converters. Multi-bit PCMsigma-delta converters can be fully dithered and do not suffer from this un-dithered truncation. Plus, every added bit reduces the noise signal by 6 dB. A 4-bit sigma-delta converter is 24 dB quieter than a 1-bit sigma-delta DSD converter. Right from the start, 1-bit DSD
